Troubleshooter : General Help - Airless

What colour pencil filter should I use?

Airless machines tend to have 2 or 3 filter stages.

Suction Filter

This is at the intake and is generaly the largest mesh, sometimes called the stonecatcher, it is intended to stop grit getting into the piston.

Manifold Filter

Not found on all machines but adds a second level of filtering, this helps stop smaller fragments of grit / dirt getting to the gun.

Pencil Filter

This is found in the gun itself and comes in different grades depending upon the product being sprayed. If you are using a very small tip to spray gloss for example the filter needs to be a smaller mesh to stop particles blocking the tip.

  • Green : Course mesh for Masonry etc.
  • White : Course / Medium for Emulsions
  • Yellow : Medium / Fine for acrylics
  • Red : Fine for varnish, gloss.
